Frank Johnson Jr. Obituary

On June 19, 1941, in Autaugaville, Alabama, Sallie Mae and Frank E. Johnson welcomed their youngest child and only son into the world. Born after four beloved daughters, he was a cherished addition to a close-knit and loving family.

At an early age, after the family relocated to Birmingham, Alabama, he confessed his faith in Christ at the age of 12 and united with Bethel Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor D.B. Todd. As a devoted member, he sang in the junior choir, served faithfully as a Sunday School teacher, and worked as an usher—early reflections of a life rooted in faith and service.

He graduated from Ullman High School and pursued extensive professional development, including completing the Life Underwriting Training Course and graduating from the Institute of Agency Management, where he later served as Dean. He also continued his studies at the American College of Life Underwriters toward his Certified Life Underwriter (CLU) designation.

He proudly served his country in the United States Army. Following his military service, he settled in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where he became an active member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church. There, he continued his commitment to ministry as a Sunday School teacher and President of the Sunday School Teachers group. When the church undertook the building of a new sanctuary and educational facility, he was entrusted with the important role of Planning Committee Chairman.

He dedicated over 32 years of service to Protective Industrial Insurance Company, rising to positions including Director of Training and Assistant Agency Director. After his tenure there, he established the Frank Johnson Insurance Agency as an independent agent. Never one to sit still, he also enjoyed working part-time as a delivery driver for Papa John’s, connecting with people wherever he went.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his four sisters: Lula Mae Kent, Georgia Cullum, Ruthie Lykes, and Dorothy Johnson.

He leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Frandale and Christy Grayson (Jonathan Grayson); five nieces, Janice Brooks (Hartford, CT), Lisa Edwards (William Edwards) (Hartsville, SC), Latrice Morrow (Timothy Morrow) (Wyandanch, NY), Joy Monroe (Norcross, GA), and Charity Lisa Robinson (Charles Robinson) (Missouri); one nephew, Christopher Kent (Detroit, MI); along with a host of cousins and extended family.

He will be remembered as a gifted storyteller who loved sharing his experiences, including vivid memories from the Civil Rights Movement and rich stories of family history. His sense of humor brought laughter to those around him, and his warm, outgoing spirit made it easy for him to connect with everyone he met—he truly never met a stranger.

He deeply loved his family, especially his parents, whom he faithfully cared for in their later years. A proud “Mama’s boy,” his devotion and tenderness were evident in every act of service and love.

He also found great joy in simple, everyday moments—taking his daily walks, sitting on the front porch greeting neighbors, or waving and chatting with passersby from his car. Through these small but meaningful interactions, he built lasting connections and friendships throughout his community.

His life was one of faith, service, love, and connection. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
